Marketing and Public Relations Internships

Organizational Overview

Scouting America National Capital Area Council (NCAC) delivers the promise of Scouting to youth in the Washington, D.C. metro area, including the District of Columbia and 16 counties in Maryland and Virginia. Our programs teach young people to “be prepared!” for adventure, education, service, leadership, and life.

Position Overview

NCAC is seeking motivated and detail‑oriented interns with strong writing and reporting abilities, an interest in media relations, and/or a desire to cultivate meaningful engagement between NCAC and the public. As part of the Marketing and Public Relations team, the intern will focus on identifying, gathering, and publishing compelling stories about Scouts and their contributions to local communities.

Depending on the candidate’s interests, the internship may include exposure to short‑form video production, newsletter writing, social media content development, and graphic design. Interns may also contribute to the creation of targeted marketing plans aimed at increasing membership and supporting the growth of the Scouting program across the council’s diverse service area.

Interns will work 15–20 hours per week and will receive consistent mentorship from the Marketing Director and Chief Communications Officer, who will help prioritize tasks and manage multiple concurrent projects and deadlines.

 Key Responsibilities

  • Cover Scouting activities throughout the NCAC region by conducting interviews, taking photographs, and writing regular feature stories.
  • Produce short‑form videos and other multimedia content that highlight the story of Scouting.
  • Develop original story ideas that support increased media coverage and community visibility.
  • Provide recommendations and contribute to initiatives within NCAC’s marketing strategic plan.
  • Attend and actively participate in key Scouting meetings as appropriate.
  • Assist with writing email newsletters and creating social media content, including posts, graphics, and visual assets, based on the intern’s interests and skillset.
  • Support other Marketing and Communications tasks as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Current undergraduate student pursuing a degree in Communications, Journalism, Marketing, Public Relations, Media Studies, Film, Digital Communication, or a related field.
  • Strong writing, interviewing, and storytelling skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with staff, volunteers, and community partners.
  • Experience with photography, videography, graphic design, or social media content creation is a plus (but not required).
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple deadlines.
  • Comfortable representing NCAC in professional communications.

Data Analysis Intern

 Position Overview

 The Data Analysis Intern will support the organization’s summer camp operations by collecting, formatting, and analyzing weekly customer‑experience survey data from two residential camp properties and day‑camp programs (18) held in public spaces. The intern will play a critical role in transforming raw survey responses into actionable insights, ensuring that camp leadership receives timely and accurate feedback to improve program quality and camper satisfaction throughout the season.

This internship offers hands-on experience with data cleaning, data structure standardization, and the use of advanced AI‑driven analytics to extract meaningful narratives and trends. The successful candidate will contribute to weekly staff briefings and will submit a comprehensive end‑of‑season impact report highlighting key findings and demonstrating how their work improved the summer camp experience for Scouts and their families.

Key Responsibilities

  • Collect and compile weekly survey data from multiple camp locations.
  • Standardize data formats to ensure consistency across diverse survey submissions.
  • Analyze qualitative and quantitative data using AI tools to identify trends, customer sentiment, and emerging themes.
  • Develop weekly summary reports to provide camp staff with actionable insights for immediate program improvement.
  • Maintain accurate records and dashboards tracking week-to-week progress and shifts in participant feedback.
  • Collaborate with program leadership to identify areas of operational or experiential enhancement.
  • Prepare and deliver a final analytic report at the conclusion of the internship outlining findings, improvements made, and the intern’s measurable impact on camp quality and satisfaction.

 Qualifications

  • Current undergraduate student pursuing a degree in Data Science, Statistics, Analytics, Computer Science, Business Intelligence, Public Policy, Psychology, or a related field.
  • Foundational knowledge of data analysis techniques and comfort working with survey data.
  • Experience with Excel, Google Sheets, or other data‑management tools. (Experience with AI‑driven analysis platforms is a plus but not required.)
  • Strong attention to detail, with the ability to maintain data accuracy and consistency across large datasets.
  • Excellent written communication skills, particularly in summarizing analytical findings.
  • Ability to work independently, manage weekly deadlines, and collaborate with staff across multiple program locations.
