The Silver Beaver Award is Scouting America’s highest council-level recognition for distinguished volunteer service. It honors registered adult leaders who have made a significant and lasting impact on the lives of youth through exceptional service to the council, the Scouting program, and their communities.
Recipients of the Silver Beaver Award exemplify dedication, selfless service, leadership, and a longstanding commitment to helping young people succeed. This prestigious honor recognizes individuals whose volunteer efforts have strengthened Scouting and positively influenced countless youth over many years.

Review the Nomination Requirements Carefully
Before beginning a nomination, thoroughly review the official nomination form and instructions. Understanding the selection criteria and submission requirements will help ensure a complete and compelling nomination package.
Start Early
Preparing a strong nomination requires time. If you believe an individual is deserving of this recognition, begin the process well in advance of the deadline. Gathering information regarding a nominee’s service, particularly their community involvement outside of Scouting, may require outreach to multiple organizations and references. Whenever possible, submit nominations at least 30 days prior to the deadline. The Council Selection Committee may reach out with clarifying questions before the nomination period closes.
Highlight Service Beyond Scouting
A key requirement of the Silver Beaver Award is demonstrated volunteer service to both youth and the broader community outside of Scouting. While the nominee’s contributions to Scouting will be a primary focus, meaningful service in other organizations and community initiatives should also be clearly documented.
Emphasize Volunteer Contributions
Professional achievements and recognition may help illustrate an individual’s character and leadership; however, the Silver Beaver Award is fundamentally a recognition of volunteer service. When describing a nominee’s impact, distinguish between accomplishments performed as part of their professional responsibilities and those completed through volunteer leadership and service.
Gather Additional Perspectives
Consider seeking input from colleagues, fellow volunteers, community leaders, or family members who can provide insight into the nominee’s service and contributions. Reaching out to organizations where the nominee volunteers may uncover valuable information that strengthens the nomination.
Consult Your District Leadership
Your District Key 3 can be an excellent resource during the nomination process. They may be able to provide additional information about the nominee’s service and can often offer valuable feedback when reviewing the nomination before submission.
