HISTORY AND ARCHIVES COMMITTEE
MISSION:
Our mission is to educate people about Scouting’s rich heritage, shaped over more than a century of service. We work to ensure that this history remains accessible and meaningful for all who want to explore the story of Scouting.
EDUCATION:
The committee demonstrates Scouting’s historical value through memorabilia displays, exhibits, lectures, and workshops at countless Scouting and public events. In addition, the committee conducts and publishes research on the history of Scouting designed to help the scouting community and the general public appreciate Scouting’s past.
HOST HIKES:
For more than a decade, the committee has offered the History of Scouting Trail (H.O.S.T.) Hikes — a series of adventures through the District of Columbia that bring Scouting’s past to life. Each hike explores a unique aspect of Scouting history in the Nation’s Capital and is named in honor of individuals who made significant contributions to the Scouting movement.
The H.O.S.T. program includes hikes designed for all ages and experience levels. The hikes include four which are about five miles in length and can be accomplished in a half-day, and a shorter hike which can be accomplished in about two and a half hours. Along each hike, Scouts encounter stations featuring hands‑on activities inspired by the skills and traditions of Scouting.
The H.O.S.T. Hikes are currently being updated for 2026. Once completed, the revised hike guides and materials will be available on the National Capital Area Council website.
SPECIAL PROJECTS:
The committee regularly takes on special projects that highlight Scouting’s role in our nation’s history. These efforts include presenting Scouting exhibits at Congressional sessions, participating in more than a dozen presidential inauguration ceremonies, and advising on the requirements for the Troop Historian position.
ARCHIVING:
The committee is responsible for preserving, maintaining, and accurately documenting the materials and memorabilia donated to—or created by—the National Capital Area Council. These items include uniforms, announcements, guidance, reports, patches, medals, and other artifacts that help tell the story of Scouting in our region.
SUPPORTING SCOUTS IN NEED:
The committee maintains a collection of Scout uniforms and gear, provided through donations, which are available by request (Helping Other Scout Troops Incorporate Needed Gear, or H.O.S.T.I.N.G.). This support helps ensure that every Scout has the equipment necessary to participate fully in Scouting activities and experiences.
If you have questions, or would like to volunteer to support the committee, please contact Committee Chair Michael Groover.
